About Your Instructors
Tim Dern & Sean Hughes
Hughes & Dern Financial specializes in financial education for retirees and those close to retirement. Sean and Tim take a no pressure, educational approach when working with their clients to assure them that they are making the best decision for their goals and needs.
Hughes & Dern Financial works primarily with clients who are retired or nearing retirement, so we are very familiar with the situations, regulations and tax laws retirees face. Sean and Tim offer educational classes all over the local area on topics such as Social Security, Medicare and Retirement Planning. Sean & Tim have also both been featured on local news outlets, such as ABC, WGN and Fox News in Chicago.
Sean and Tim met working together at another firm before they went off on their own as Independent advisors. As independent advisors, Hughes & Dern Financial has access to a full array of products and services to best serve our clients’ needs. As Fiduciaries, we work with our clients’ best interest in mind, not our own.
Sean Hughes graduated from the University of St Francis with a finance degree and started his career working as an Ameriprise financial advisor. As a collegiate football All Conference selection Sean learned a strong work ethic and how teammates work together to achieve more. Sean Hughes is a Registered Investment Advisor and takes a comprehensive and detailed approach, when working with his clients to help them understand the complexities and moving parts that are important in retirement.
Tim Dern has been married for 37 years to his wife Helen. They have 3 children and 7 grandchildren. With this life experience, Tim is able to relate well with his clients. Tim had a business career for many years as the Chief Marketing Officer of a large international company, prior to becoming a financial advisor with an emphasis on retirement planning. Tim graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Education. Tim is a natural teacher and this helps his clients understand their options clearly, before they make important financial decisions. Tim graduated from the University of Indiana on a 4 year athletic scholarship
